Pax et Bonum on the feast of St. Francis

Greetings from Galway,

Fr. Ivan asked me to give an update on my year postulancy journey with the Franciscan’s. Postulancy is a time of discernment where I live with the brothers, learning the rhythm of religious life and open myself up to being found by Him and learn if I have a vocation both to the priesthood as well as with the Franciscan brotherhood. On this journey of discovery I am joined by Ken, another postulant from Dublin, and together we are stumbling our way though the entanglement and enlightenment of our breviaries (daily prayers of the psalms), learning the Franciscan Spiritualism as well as assisting the friars in various daily chores – cooking, cleaning and gardening etc. We are accompanied and guided through this time of exploration by our Postulancy Master Fr. Liam Kelly and the other brothers living in the Galway Abbey. In addition to getting time for personal prayer and contemplation, we are encouraged to develop creative interests and I’ve started to do a bit of drawing and painting.

First evening of the postulancy, in the Galway Abbey side chapel with the Franciscan Brothers.

It’s a long road to travel, I’ve only begun to take the first few steps and only the Lord knows where my path will lead me. But for now I’m settling into this new way of life and am conscious of all the wonderful people that have helped me get here. For this the people and community of Ringsend have a special place in my heart and prayers.

Till we meet again,

Pax et Bonum – Peace and the Good

Michael
